Lusset Glen Stone Bench
An experienced stonemason is sought to design, create and deliver a roman inspired bench in Lusset Glen in Old Kilpatrick. The bench will celebrate the area’s heritage, particularly the Roman influence within Old Kilpatrick. This project forms part of a wider “Rediscovering the Antonine Wall” project working across Central Scotland to build better connections for communities and visitors along the length of the Antonine Wall. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, West Dunbartonshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland.
The budget for the design, construction and installation of the bench is £6,000 and the deadline for completion is 28 February 2023. The Commission is being delivered by the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project in partnership with local community group – Action Old Kilpatrick.
Project Scope
The project scope is outlined below. It has been based on initial stakeholder engagement and community research.
- A stone carved bench, to be installed along the main Lusset Glen footpath. This bench will be designed by a stone mason in conjunction with the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall team and Action Old Kilpatrick community group. The bench will be highlighted in the interpretation board and will feature links to artefacts discovered during the excavation of Old Kilpatrick Fort.
- The bench should be an attractive sculpture in its own right. The ground around the bench should also be taken into consideration.
- The chosen stonemason will need to liaise with West Dunbartonshire Greenspace team to organise installation of the bench; agree a specification for any required foundation and insure it respects health and safety requirements. Greenspace will install the bench, but the appointed stonemason may be requested to attend at installation in agreement with the project team.
Expressions of interest – information required
Stonemasons are invited to express interest, through submission of indicative ideas, based on the project brief as well as:
• Thoughts on installation
• Detailed budget proposal
• A relevant portfolio of previous work and experience.
Expressions of interest that do not contain the information above cannot be considered.
Please submit your expression of interest to Stephen.balfour@west-dunbartonshire.gov.uk
The deadline for applications is Sunday 8th January 2023 at midnight.
Please be aware that there will be limited office cover during the Christmas – New Year week so there will be a delay in responding to any correspondence sent during this time.
