Activity

Archaeologists found shopping lists and birthday party invitations written by the Romans at Vindolanda. Why not do the same? To write, Romans used wax tablets, papyrus or wood bark. Marcus has been using birch bark (oak or elder works well too). Peel some loose bark off the tree and use it to write down your shopping list or invite your friends over to a roman dinner!

Artefact

Thanks to the important road network trade in the Roman Empire was much easier than we would think. This samian bowl found at Balmuildy was probably a much prized possession of a Commanders family. It carries the makers mark CINAM and we can trace it back to the main pottery workshops in Lezoux in modern day France.
